Perhaps the most fitting question that should be asked at this point is did the movement succeed? The answer to this question truthfully depends on each individual view of success and effectiveness. To state that the anti-war movement did not play at least some role in ending the war would be a mistake. But to proclaim that the movement on its own did stop the war is also untrue. The ten years of protests had an impact on the political process in the United States, but the extent of that influence continues to be debated among movement participants, scholars, politicians, and activists today.

Looking back upon the anti-war movement one year after the Paris Peace Agreement was signed, the Weather Underground released its book, Prairie Fire: The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-Imperialism. In it, the group discusses its political ideology, which includes a reflection on the effectiveness of the anti-war movement. They write:

The movement played a specific and important role. Without it, the Johnson-Nixon governments would most likely have:

- launched a land invasion of North Vietnam

- waged tactical or full nuclear war

- started a war with China

- bombed the dikes of North Vietnam
